Portable Sound Laboratories iMainGo2 speaker case

I don’t think I have reviewed anything that has captured the imagination of friends and family like the iMainGo2 speaker case. Once I showed it off, everyone (and I mean everyone) said they wanted one. And when I told them how little it cost, they REALLY wanted one.
So what is it, exactly? Well it’s a case that thinks it’s a boom box, or vice versa. You strap your iPhone/iPod into it, turn it on, zip it up and voila, instant party! Really, it’s that easy.
The case measures 5.7 X 3.8 X 2.4 inches and weighs only 9 oz.. Its a bit on the bulky side, but there is a speaker built into it, after all. And once zipped up, it completely covers your player while through an over-sized plastic window on one side, you can still use the iPhone or iPod’s controls. Although not waterproof, your iPhone will be protected from the elements inside this thing (including a foam piece and plastic cover for even more protection).
There is also a cool feature if you need a travel alarm clock, Set you alarm on your iPhone/iPod, push the button to the ALM setting on the iMainGo, and that’s it. The iMainGo will turn on when the alarm goes off, which can save big time on battery life. Speaking of batteries, the iMainGo uses 4 AAA batteries and since they are stacked, it can be a bit of a pain inserting them. The battery life is up to 30 hours (according to the literature).
So how does it sound? Well it’s no Bose SoundDock (of course), but this little thing rocks! That’s what blew everyone away when I demonstrated it. Once the music started, eyes got big and smiles spread across faces. The fact that it is a well-made, protective case AND dynamite speaker unit is a winning combination.
The biggest surprise is the bass it produces. You just don’t expect a full richness in the music from something so small. Its an overused term, but it does sound much bigger than it is. When you first hold it, you just want to play it loud… and you can. You can turn it up to a more-than-decent volume level with no distortion (you don’t want to max-out the volume, though) I liken it to a really good tabletop radio.
The iMainGo is a neat little product that that makes you smile. For only 40 bucks it could make a great gift or stocking stuffer during the holidays. There is nothing serious about this thing. It has fun written all over it. And shouldn’t that be what iPhone accessories are all about?
